Hilo Hattie's iconic hibiscus sign missing

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

It's the signature of the Hilo Hattie store in Honolulu; the 10-foot tall red hibiscus sign. The sign is gone. That's right, gone.

"Someone unscrewed it, took off. That piece is about 10 feet tall, 4 feet wide, made of plexiglass so it's not that heavy - but it is quite large, and it's gone" explained Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Storfer.

Sometime overnight Thursday, the thief or thieves made off with the sign, avoiding detection in the process.

"We have security video in the store and in the entrance to the store, but nothing facing outward towards the street" said Storfer.

The news is not all bad. The plexiglass is actually the least expensive part of the sign. The metal framing and internal lighting are far more complex and costly to replace. Additionally, Storfer believes it may still be in one piece.

“We don't believe it was malicious intent because they could have just smashed it and walked away. Perhaps it was a prank in conjunction with Halloween. Maybe it was a trick and not a treat".

Storfer says the store has NOT called police. He hopes this extension of aloha will help get the sign returned.

“There will be no questions asked if you want to return the sign. If you want to tell us where it is, we'll be glad to pick it up".

Any anonymous tips can be made by calling the store or posting to one of their social media outlets.
