Power outage affects 500 customers in Mililani

MILILANI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Approximately 500 customers in Mililani are without power on Friday due to equipment issues in the Launani Valley area, according to the Hawaiian Electric Company.

A HECO spokesman said the outage happened around midnight. HECO crews are currently on scene making repairs and a helicopter has been dispatched to check overhead lines.

The following is a statement from HECO:

Hawaiian Electric apologizes to our customers in Central Oahu who experienced a lengthy power outage that began after 9 p.m. last night.

Many Mililani Mauka customers affected by the initial outage were switched to another circuit, restoring their power before 10 p.m. Repairs continued throughout the night, but at about 4 a.m. it was found that other unknown damage was preventing the restoration of power to remaining customers without power.

Inspection of the surrounding overhead lines by helicopter had to await first light this morning, when it was found that a large tree branch had broken and brought down a power line. Crews had to remove the tree branch before repairs could resume. Those repairs were finished before noon today and power has been restored to the area.
