HONOLULU (AP) - State Rep. Mark Takai has been endorsed by The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
The Democrat is in a close race with Republican Charles Djou to replace Democratic U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who up her seat to run for Senate.
The group's president Max Richtman says Takai is prepared to serve the needs of seniors. He says Takai will make preserving Social Security and Medicare a priority in Congress.
Former U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka says Takai has been and will continue to be a staunch defender of seniors' retirement benefits.
The endorsement comes on the heels of negative ads aimed at Takai for his voting record on taxes and pensions.
Takai says the race is critical and he needs all his supporters to come out and vote.
