Hawaii Island man dies in fall from bed of pickup

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A Big Island man has died of injuries suffered when he fell from the back of a moving pickup.

West Hawaii Today reports 41-year-old Michael J. Anderson of Ocean View was injured Saturday.

Police just after 8 a.m. Saturday took a call on the incident.

Police say Anderson was standing in the bed of a pickup westbound on Walaka Drive in Ocean View when the driver ran a stop sign at Paradise Parkway and made a sharp left turn into a gravel lot.

Anderson was ejected. He was found in the eastbound lane of Walaka Drive, rushed to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and flown to The Queens Medical Center on Oahu, where he died Sunday.

The 45-year-old driver was taken into custody but released pending additional investigation.
