HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An electrical glitch has created safety concerns at the Halawa Correctional Facility. Last Friday, staff members reported prison doors would randomly open, or wouldn't lock.
The Department of Public Safety says that a bad part caused the system to malfunction. Corrections officers had to use old-fashioned keys as they shut down the automatic doors in some sections of the prison. Access to the main walkway in the prison is being limited, and maximum security prisoners are not being allowed their one-hour per day time outside.
The Department of Public Safety also says that the part to fix the system has arrived from the mainland and crews hope to have it running today.
