Concerns arise as officials look to set off illegal fireworks

NANAKULI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Happening today, you can voice your opinion on a proposal to get rid of illegal fireworks by setting them off in Nanakuli.

The fireworks are from the Waikele storage bunker where five men died while trying to dispose of the devices in 2011.

Now, federal officials are looking at a property on Paakea Road to set off the more than 54-hundred illegally shipped fireworks. They want to ignite 600 at a time, once a month, for six months, but the state has not issued the permit yet.

The Department of Health says it's waiting to hear from the community first.

If you have any questions or comments, the Nanakuli-Maili neighborhood board will be having a meeting tonight at Nanaikapono Elementary School to address any concerns.
