Flash flood warning extended for parts of Big Island as heavy rain closes roads

KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service has extended a Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island until 6 p.m. Saturday.

At 7 a.m. Big Island Civil Defense reported road closures due to flash flooding near Kawaa flats between the 57 and 58 mile markers of the Mamalahoa Highway. 

The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.

Other locations in the warning include but are not limited to Wood Valley, Pahala, Punaluu Beach and Punaluu. 

At 2:55 p.m., radar and satellite imagery continued to show heavy showers over portions of the Kau and Puna districts.

Heavy showers will continue to stream into the Kau and Puna districts over the next 3 hours. This warning may need to be extended beyond 6:00 p.m. if flash flooding persists.
