Big Island man sentenced for carjacking, assault

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A Big Island man convicted of a 2013 assault and carjacking has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Hilo Circuit Court Judge Glenn Hara on Tuesday sentenced 33-year-old Jeremy Todd Rios to five years for the charges and five more for violating probation.

Defense attorney Stanton Oshiro unsuccessfully argued for concurrent sentences. He says Rios suffers from mental illness and substance abuse and needs to be treated simultaneously.

Rios in July pleaded guilty to felony assault, terroristic threatening, auto theft and other charges.

Police say Rios on July 20, 2013, injured a 55-year-old man in Wainaku and threatened to return to kill him.

Police say Rios drove off, crashed into a pickup and carjacked another vehicle.

He was arrested later that day.
