Haiku driver critical after crash into tree

HAIKU, Hawaii (AP) - A driver was taken to Maui Memorial Hospital in critical condition following a one-car crash in Haiku.

Maui police say the 26-year-old Haiku man just after 4 p.m. Sunday was driving on West Kuiaha Road near Kaupakalua Road when he failed to make a right turn and smashed his sport utility vehicle into a tree.

Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Police say he suffered life-threatening injuries.
