HONOLULU (AP) - University of Hawaii alumnus Fred Chan and his wife Annie are pledging $250,000 to help community college students transfer to the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The University of Hawaii Foundation said Thursday the money will help full-time undergraduates who are transferring from community colleges within the UH system.
Fred Chan co-founded a private manufacturer of computer multimedia products in California in 1984. ESS Technology Inc. today holds a leading share of the digital video and audio market.
He earned his bachelor's in electrical engineering and his master's information and computer sciences from UH. He attributes much of his success to this education.
The Chans also created an endowed scholarship fund in support of electrical engineering students in 2001.
