Dept. of Emergency Management investigating cause of Hawaii Kai siren malfunction

The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management is investigating what caused a Civil Defense siren in the Hawaii Kai area to malfunction early Sunday morning. 

Officials say they received initial calls of the siren ringing around 4 a.m. Sunday. 

Hawaii Kai fire officials went to the scene and deactivated the siren. 

The siren will remain deactivated until crews can assess what caused the malfunction.

Official are asking residents in the area to sign up for Nixle alerts with the "City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management" on their phone in case an emergency occurs and the siren is not able to alert them. 

Technicians will conduct further investigations on Monday.
