Woman killed after driving car off H-1 freeway

AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 64-year-old Waikele woman died Wednesday after she drove her vehicle over a guardrail on the H-1 freeway, according to Emergency Medical Services.

Honolulu police arrived on scene at the H-1 eastbound near the Kaahumanu Overpass at about 8:15 a.m. Officers said they believe the victim's vehicle hit another vehicle, spun around 180 degrees and rolled over the guardrail, flipping several more times down an embankment before coming to rest. It landed near Waimalu Elementary School on Moanalua Road.

The vehicle that had been hit, which was traveling in the shoulder lane, allegedly impacted three other cars. No serious injuries to the individuals in those vehicles were reported. Police said all drivers remained on the scene, but police are looking for any additional witnesses.

Speed may have been a factor, but alcohol was likely not involved.

Police closed lanes of the H-1 eastbound to investigate the accident.
