LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - The state is holding a public hearing on Kauai about proposed new fishing rules for Haena.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources is proposing establishing a community-based subsistence fishing area for the community on Kauai's north shore.
The proposed rules would limit the type of fishing gear and methods that may be used. They would prohibit the harvest of marine life for commercial purposes and set new daily take and possession limits for certain species.
The public hearing is scheduled to be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Hanalei Elementary School.
The fishing area includes waters in the Haena ahupuaa - or traditional land division - from the shoreline out to one mile.
