HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The crew aboard a Mexican pleasure boat rescued a fisherman who had been adrift for a week at sea inside a giant foam cooler.
Raymondo Rodriguez had set out from a beach near Acapulco on September 14 with another man on a fishing trip. But their boat got swamped during Tropical Storm Polo last week.
Rodriguez survived by tossing out the fish from his six foot square cooler and crawled in, but the other man's body was found Monday in the submerged boat.
The crew of the pleasure boat that rescued him said Rodriguez was still clinging to a seagull he had caught as his only source of food, and didn't want to let go of the carcass when he was finally rescued.
Rodriguez suffered hypothermia and dehydration but was taken to a local naval hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
