Big Island man who sparked outrage after catching tiger shark is arrested for theft

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Big Island man has been arrested and formally charged for boat theft, and this isn't the first time he's made the news.

A video posted to YouTube last year showed Michael McCrum using a rope and chain to drag in a huge tiger shark.

Locals were outraged at the incident, saying the shark was a frequent visitor to Honokahau Harbor and was even given the nickname, "Laverne."

Despite the clip appearing to show cruelty to the tiger shark, McCrum's actions were not illegal because there are no signs in the harbor saying that fishing is prohibited, and he wasn't arrested.

Now, McCrum is facing felony charges from when he was arrested last week. Prosecutors say McCrum and Issac Akina stole a skiff, a boat motor, and burglarized a home.

McCrum is expected in court where he'll answer to those charges next week.
