Man dies in apparent drowning off Ka'u coast

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Police say a 53-year-old man has died in an apparent drowning off the Big Island's Ka'u coast.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports police were called just after noon Sunday.

Responders pulled Reginald Awaa of Mountain View from the water. He was transported to Ka'u Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Awaa had been diving with his family when he became distressed.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
