The Hawaiian Word of the Day is awa. It is commonly pronounced and written as kawa in parts of the Pacific and the pharmaceutical industry.
Awa refers to a root which is either cut into pieces and chewed or smashed and mixed with water to make a a ceremonial drink served in a coconut cup. The root was also used medicinally with other plants to treat insomnia, headaches and kidney disorders.
