LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A man with a broken leg, a second man and a 10-year-old boy managed to swim to shore safely Sunday night after their boat capsized off Kauai's west side.
Zack Romanak of Port Allen says he tried steering his 19-foot boat to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor around 8 p.m. when a large wave hit.
He tells The Garden Island the wave threw him, his son Noah and guest Brad Warren into the water.
Warren's prosthetic hip and leg broke. Warren says he experienced the worst pain he's ever felt.
Romanak wanted the three to stay with the boat but waves kept sending Warren into the water.
They decided to swim toward a party they could hear on shore. They reached land after about a half hour.
