HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Thursday marks the anniversary of the strongest and most destructive hurricane to ever hit Hawaii: Iniki.

On Sept. 11, 1992, the eye of the Category 4 hurricane passed directly over Kauai, devastating the island. With winds at 140 miles per hour, Hurricane Iniki killed six people and damaged more than 1,400 homes and 5,000 utility poles.

Twenty-two years later, Iniki remains one of the costliest hurricanes in the Eastern Pacific, causing nearly $2 billion in damage.
