MANOA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A University of Hawaii at Manoa department announced a name change Wednesday to encompass a broader range of public safety services that it actually provides.
The UH Manoa Campus Security and Emergency Management department will now be called the Department of Public Safety. In addition to core security and emergency management functions described in its former name, the new name represents extensive investigating, documenting and reporting requirements of various federal laws such as the Jeanne Clery Act, Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act.
The Department of Public Safety also provides educational outreach presentations on crime awareness and prevention.
The department said the name change reflects the true integration of principles and programs associated with traditional security, law enforcement and emergency management functions.
