House District 41 race a three-man runoff

EWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - There are about 27,000 people who live within the boundaries of House District 41, and there are three men who are running to represent them.

Matt Lopresti is an HPU ethics professor, who unseated democratic incumbent Rida Cabanilla by a wide margin in the primary election.

"The people of Ewa are looking for someone they can trust. They want somebody who will honor that trust with reasonable advocacy for their working families," he said.

Bryan Jeremiah is a pastor who preaches about the turnaround from his criminal past and his blue collar background. He's running as the republican despite no backing from Hawaii's Republican Party.

"Like a lot of the people here that are both past plantation workers, as well as a lot of construction workers, just people who have through the generations worked with their hands, I connect well with them," he said.

The third person on the ballot is outspoken ex-City Councilman Tom Berg, the Libertarian candidate.

"If elected, what they would see is there's a different opinion out there when it comes to responsibility of government," he said.

Lopresti promises to tackle Ewa's traffic issues and care for the community's senior citizens.

"We need to be able to support the kupuna so they can age in place, they can afford to age in place. And last but not least is affordable housing, balancing that with protection and preservation of the environment," he said.

Jeremiah's platform is people over politics. He wants to upgrade the area's aging infrastructure, especially the schools.

"Campbell High School, Ilima, Pohakea, Ewa Elementary. We have the largest high school in the state, yet we have the least amount of money for any improvements," he said.

If he wins, Berg will push to finish the long-awaited connector road and fight to preserve agricultural land on the Ewa plain.

"If we're going to add another 50,000 cars ahead of us onto the H1, then should we really be paving over the most productive farm land? Remember now, it has access to water, prime ag soils," he said.

House District 41 includes all of Ewa, plus Ocean Pointe and West Loch. Lopresti, Jeremiah or Berg will be the next person who will represent it.
