WAIMANALO, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - {Update}

Prosecutors on Saturday charged the 15-year-old Waimanalo boy who is accused of killing his mother.

Thirty-six-year-old Shanell Moku was beaten to death outside her home on Thursday night.

Her son, a student at Kaiser High School is charged with second-degree murder.

He's being held at the Kapolei Detention Home.

Family and friends of Shannell Moku gathered at the Waimanalo home on Bell Street Friday to grieve together.  The 36-year old mother of five was murdered allegedly by her own son.

Honolulu Police were called to the home about 9 p.m. Thursday.  Moku had critical injuries to her head and face.  She died at the hospital.

The 15-year old boy was arrested and officers took him to the detention center in Kapolei.

There were no other adults in the home at the time but there was a young child.

In a Facebook post years ago, Moku wrote, "I am a single mom raising five (keiki) and just trying to get ahead in life."

Family members say the boy and his mother have had conflicts before, but they are shocked and saddened by what happened.  They describe the boy as a good athlete and student.  He now faces a second degree murder charge.
