TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Sierra Vista couple is behind bars this morning. Megan Gerhart and Robert Hollenbough are now facing child abuse charges.

Cochise County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the couple's home on the morning of September 1, after receiving a call about a woman who refused to leave the property.

According to deputies they met with the caller, who told them the woman was there to check on the welfare of a child in the home, but she had left the property already.  The woman was the child's grandmother.  Deputies said they needed to check on the status of the child for themselves, so they could then contact the grandmother.

Megan Gerhart brought out the child in question, a two-year-old, who appeared to CCSO deputies to be pale and thin.  Deputies left the property and made contact with the grandmother, who told the deputies she had gone to the home to tell her daughter, Gerhart, that another family member was sick, but that she was asked to leave.

Arizona Department of Child Safety personnel were contacted by CCSO deputies and told about the condition of the toddler and that he appeared extremely thin.  DCS arrived at the home on September 2, for their own welfare check on the toddler; they immediately removed the two-year-old and transported him to the University Medical Center for evaluation.

Staff at UMC told DCS officials the boy only weighed 17 pounds, considered underweight for his age.  The toddler is still at UMC and is listed as stable.

CCSO deputies arrived back at the home on September 3, with a search warrant, knowing there were two other children inside the home. DCS personnel took custody of the 9-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy; a sixth person living inside the home was taken to a local care facility for significant medical issues.

Both Gerhart and Hollenbough have been booked into the Cochise County jail and face charges of domestic violence/child abuse.  CCSO is still investigating the case.
