TRIPOLI, LIBYA (RNN) - A month after American personnel evacuated the U.S. Embassy in Libya, Islamist- allied militia says it has secured the compound, according to the Associated Press.

An umbrella group for Islamist militias invited an AP journalist to walk through the compound Sunday.

Moussa Abu-Zaqia, a commander for the Dawn of Libya group, told the AP  forces controlled the compound since last week.

U.S. Ambassador to Libya Deborah Jones said the compound appeared to be "safeguarded" and was not "ransacked."

In July, the State Department evacuated the U.S. Embassy in Libya and Tunisia. Operations were suspended until the security improved.
