Hokulea and her sister escort Hikianalia are currently departing American Samoa with the aim of arriving in Apia, Samoa early Sunday morning.
The canoes and crew will join the United Nations Small Island Developing States Conference as a part of a larger partnership promoting environmental sustainability and ocean health for islands around the world. The conference is scheduled for September 1st through September 4th.
The Hawaiian name for this journey, Malama Honua, means "to care for our island earth." This journey is taking Hokulea and her sister canoe Hikianalia across Earth's oceans to grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world. The voyage will cover 47,000 nautical miles, 85 ports, and 26 countries and continue through 2017.
