HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii News Now's Rick Blangiardi, a former University of Hawaii football coach, will serve as honorary captain to the Rainbow Warriors for Saturday's season opener against the University of Washington Huskies. The station's general manager will accompany the team captains during the pre-game coin toss at midfield.
Blangiardi has a deep connection to the athletics program, as a football player for two seasons in 1965 and 1966, and a coach for five seasons, including linebackers coach during UH's upset of the Huskies in 1973. UH won 10-7 in a game considered by many as the biggest upset in school history.
Blangiardi also served as a play-by-play announcer alongside sportscaster Jim Leahey.
The Massachusetts native has worked as an executive in the television industry for nearly 40 years. He was named general manager of Hawaii News Now in 2009.
