Police recover cross stolen from Hilo church

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A 7-foot white cross stolen from the lawn of a Hilo church has been recovered.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the cross was taken Aug. 12 from historic United Community Church.

It didn't get far.

Police recovered the cross Wednesday less than a block from the church in a man's yard.

Police say the resident saw the cross on the side of the road and erected it in his own yard.

The man is not a suspect in the petty misdemeanor case.

Police believe the man who took the cross was a "young white male jogger" who pulled it out and ran.
