A Honolulu police officer accidentally killed himself at his Wilhelmina Rise home over the weekend.
Jens Magelssen, 39, was hosting a barbecue for friends from the mainland. He was reportedly showing his gun to them and thought it was unloaded.
"It hits us all hard," former Honolulu Police Chief Lee Donohue said. Donohue did not know the officer but said any death in the the department is like a death in a family.
"We are all brothers and sisters," Donohue said.
Magelssen had been on the force for six years. Fellow officers describe him as a nice, quiet man and a good cop who never got in trouble.
The case is being investigated as an unattended death.
