2-A-Days: Evangel

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - The Evangel Eagles had for players who will be playing Division I football in college this season. The eagles will be relying on some younger players to step up and be leaders.

Head coach Byron Dawson a defensive minded coach. He believes the defense can help carry this team early, with leaders like 4 star recruit Jerry Tillery on the D-line and senior cornerback Trent Jackson. A strong defense can help the the high powered offense that will be lead by sophomore quarterback Conner Curry.

Jackson has accepted the leadership role and is ready for the challenge of leading this defense.

"We are going to be a run stopping defense, no passing yards, or running yards. We like to focus on the little things like discipline, hitting our right zones, running the right reads, and being savvy on the field.

Coach Dawson defense was stingy in the 2013 season and it all starts up front on the defensive line.

"We only had one team to have over 100 yards rushing on us and that was a great accomplishment.  We really started with the in the box, if you can stop the run and make teams one dimensional it makes everybodyelse'ss jobs easier.

The eagles will have an opportunity to play in the highest classification when playoffs roll around. They jumped on the opportunity to move up to Division I. Coach Dawson believes playing the best not only prepares his team for the real world but also teaches life lessons.

"In 2005 we actually played 1A ball and we had teams like Cotton Valley and Sarepta who were forfeiting games.  Teams were taking fines so they wouldn't have to play us, so we struggled through that and now we have the opportunity to play up in 5A and we are excited about it," said Dawson.

Sophomore quarterback Conner Curry embraces the challenge.

"There is some great competition and coaches always sawhat'sts a championship if you are having it easy. Its good to be able to play with the best of the best in the state and if we do win just give God all the Glory," said Curry.

The eagles will host  Riverside Sept. 7th.
