UH women's bball picks up USC transfer

University of Hawaii women's basketball coach Laura Beeman announced the signing of 6-3 post player Deanna Calhoun. Calhoun, a junior transfer from USC, graduated in just three years, so she will be available to play two years starting with the upcoming 2014-15 season.

Calhoun was originally recruited by Beeman and associate head coach Mary Wooley while they were assistants at USC prior to beginning their tenure at UH. Calhoun redshirted her true freshman year in 2011-12 to rehab an injury sustained during her senior season of high school. During her career, she has appeared in 31 total games while averaging 1.4 points and 1.45 rebounds per game with a .444 field-goal percentage and 10 career blocks.

She is a 2011 graduate of Albany High School (Albany, Calif.) who averaged 17.7 points and 11.9 rebounds a game as a senior before suffering the season-ending injury. Calhoun earned all-conference Most Valuable Player honors with the Cougars and was ranked the No. 34 forward in the nation coming out of high school. She also lettered in volleyball and was a scholar-athlete.

"We are so excited to finally coach Deanna-and to have her for two years is a dream," says Beeman. "She is a fantastic basketball player but an even better person. What she will bring to the team physically is obvious, but her gentle soul is the real gift."

Calhoun is the final piece to the Rainbow Wahine squad who have reloaded for the 2014-15 season. The 'Bows have eight returnees, led by all-conference players Shawna-Lei Kuehu and Ashleigh Karaitiana. With the addition of Calhoun, the 'Bows will have a much different look on their front line. Hawaii's lineup in the post now includes 6-2 freshman Dalayna Sampton; 6-3 center Brianna Kennedy; 6-4 center Rachel (Connie) Morris; and the 6-3 Calhoun will join 6-1 sophomore center Angelina Smith and 6-1 forward Shawlina Segovia who had to sit out last season. Calhoun is one of nine newcomers to join the squad.

The Rainbow Wahine will open their season with an exhibition game against UH-Hilo on Oct. 29 before opening the 2014-15 slate on the road at Colorado State (Nov. 14) and at Denver (Nov. 16).
