GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is a sci fi adventure and a spoof of superhero movies at the same time.

What I like about most about this movie is its cast of goofball characters and its irreverent sense of humor.

Chris Pratt of TV's PARKS AND RECREATION is Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star Lord, at least to himself. He's a junk dealer and petty thief kidnapped from earth at the time of his mother's death 26 years earlier. He still carries a Walkman full of 80's music that his mother made for him, and that music becomes a big part of the movie's soundtrack.

Soldier: Who are you?

Quill: Star Lord.

Soldier: Who?

Quill: Star Lord, man. Legendary outlaw. (The name means nothing to his captors who scoff at him.)

Peter has stumbled into a cave that contains the "Orb," an object also wanted by the meanest villain in the galaxy. (What makes the Orb so powerful is not a question you need to ask in a movie as silly as this one.)

Prison official (John C. Reilly): Check out the rap sheets….he's wanted mostly on charges of minor assault, public intoxication, and fraud.

Peter (he pantomimes turning a crank as his middle finger rises in a vulgar salute):        Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know how this machine worked.

Suffice it to say the smart aleck, Peter, is sent to jail where he connects with a bunch of other half crazy prisoners planning to escape, get hold of the Orb, and save the galaxy from destruction by the villain.

Peter: So here we are: a thief, two thugs, an assassin, and a maniac, but we're not going to stand by as evil wipes out the galaxy. I guess we're stuck together: partners.

Planet official (to an underling): Are you telling me the fate of 12 billion people in in the hands of these criminals?

Raccoon: Oh, yeah!

Bradley Cooper is the voice of Rocket, a vicious. foul mouthed raccoon whose partner is a tree without roots (Vin Diesel) that can say just one line for every occasion: "I am groot."

Zoe Saldana is Gamora, a green skinned assassin, and Dave Bautista, the pro wrestler, plays a revenge minded muscle man named Drax.

Rocket: Metaphors are gonna go over his head.

Drax: Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast. I would catch it.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is so cheesy and silly that I was almost embarrassed to get such a kick of it.

It's my biggest guilty pleasure of the summer so far.
