PUNA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - HELCO confirms 8,100 customers are still without power after Iselle barreled through East Hawai'i Island. Outages are mostly in the Puna District, but there are smaller pockets of neighborhoods without electricity in other areas.
Hawai'i Electric Light officials have set up a Customer Information Center at the Hawaiian Shores Community Center in Hawaiian Beaches to answer questions from the public, provide status updates and offer a free charging station. HELCO officials say they appreciate their customers patience as they work to get lines repaired as quickly and safely as possible. Utility poles and crews are also on their way from O'ahu to provide additional assistance.
HELCO officials say customers who are still without power at this time should expect an extended outage into the end of this week and, in some cases, much longer.
