HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

It's a tradition 40 seasons in the making and on Sunday morning, the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team kicked off year XL of the Dave Shoji era.

With four national titles and a resume that reads winningest coach in women's volleyball, Shoji  is not only one of the most decorated coaches in University of Hawaii history, but one of the best in the country.

While he won't address if this is his last year, he's showing no signs of slowing down.

This season's squad is one of the younger ones in recent memory.

It's the first time in four years we won't be seeing standouts Emily Hartong, Mita Uiato and Ali Longo.

Only two seniors are returning, but there is consistency because of Shoji's return.

Even after 40 years, he says day one of practice never gets old.

"We've got a good nucleus," Shoji said. "I still feel good. That's the main thing. I'm healthy. I still have a love for the game, so it's still exciting to me."

Hawaii opens the season August 29 against Ohio.
