Hawaiian Electric Company on Oahu is sending equipment, materials and crews to the Big Island as part of a coordinated effort to help restore power to Hawaii island customers.
Hawaii News Now has learned that Hawaiian Electric trucks and poles were loaded on to a Young Brothers barge headed for Hilo on Saturday night.
About 8,100 residents remained without power on Sunday. Those most affected are in the Puna district as well as areas in smaller pockets on the east side of the island.
According to officials, crews have made significant progress repairing the main transmission lines that serve as the backbone of the island's electric grid.
Crews can now focus their attention on restoring power to individual neighborhoods.
