Rescuers find body of Kauai hiker swept away by rushing river

HANAKAPIAI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Rescuers on Kauai have recovered the body of a female believed to be that of a missing 19-year-old hiker.

Crews airlifted the body from the rocky base of the Hanakoa Stream late Saturday morning. Officials say the woman had been living on Kauai for the past several months.

The 19-year-old woman had been camping in the Kalalau Valley with a 24-year-old male friend earlier in the week.

While the two were making their way out of the valley Friday afternoon, they attempted to cross the Hanakoa Stream and were swept downstream.

The man was able to make it to shore with minor injuries, and searched for the woman but could not locate her. He then decided to hike out of the valley to call for help.

Firefighters received the distress call at around 6:15 p.m. Friday. Rescue crews were on scene by air at 6:30 p.m. and continued to search until sundown but found no sign of the missing hiker.

The search resumed at daylight Saturday with additional crews from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The body was found near the Hanakoa shoreline at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
