WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - In anticipation of Hurricane Iselle hitting the Hawaiian islands, the Maui County Department of Water Supply requests that customers conserve water during the storm. High winds and potential flooding could disrupt power supply to water sources, so DWS advises customers to store drinking water now in the event that water service is shut off.
Water and wastewater systems may be compromised if electricity can't be supplied to power pumps and motors in distribution and transmission systems, DWS said. Power outages may occur during a storm, forcing the DWS to shut off valves and isolate tanks to reduce the risk of damage and water loss. Water will be restored as soon as it is safe for personnel to open lines and flush if necessary.
All irrigation systems and other non-essential uses of water should be shut off until further notice. Unnecessary use of the wastewater system should also be minimized.
