(NBC NEWS) – U.S. Major General Harold Greene was deputy commander in charge of training Afghan government forces and was killed Tuesday visiting some of the men he helped train.

It happened at a military training academy outside Kabul, witnesses say, a lone Afghan soldier in uniform opened fire with his assault rifle. General Greene was killed, a German general and more than a dozen US and coalition troops were wounded, and the gunman was also killed.

"This shooting is, of course a painful reminder of the service and sacrifice that our men and women in uniform make every day," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.

In Afghanistan, so called "insider attacks" have killed 53 coalition troops in 2012. New safety procedures were put in place, and the number dropped to 16 last year.
