HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The Hawaii County clerk won't evaluate a complaint that a council candidate isn't qualified to represent the Puna district because she claimed a homeowner's property tax exemption on a Hilo home.
County Clerk Stewart Maeda told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald (http://bit.ly/1rT0c0f ) the complaint against Tiffany Edwards Hunt was filed after the June 10 deadline for candidate objections.
But he says generally the homeowner's property tax exemption is an issue for county tax collectors rather than the county elections division.
Edwards Hunt was one of numerous property owners who received letters from the county this year asking for their exemption status to be clarified.
She said she removed the exemption after receiving the letter. The change goes into effect next year.
