First day of school delayed on Kauai due to water advisory

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A "boil water advisory" from the Kauai Department of Water has prompted the Hawaii State Department of Education to close four schools on the Garden Island tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 1.

The following schools are affected:
Kauai High
Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle
King Kaumualii Elementary
Wilcox Elementary

The impacted schools enroll a total of approximately 3,500 students. Friday would have been the first day for the 2014-15 school year at those schools.

The water system became compromised during a construction project in Hanamaulu. The Kauai Department of Water is conducting tests on the water, and results should be available on Friday, Aug. 1.

Kauai Complex Area Superintendent Bill Arakaki said the decision to close the schools was made as a precaution to ensure the health and safety of the students, teachers, administrators, and support staff of the affected schools.

Schools not located in Hanamaulu and Lihue are expected to open as scheduled tomorrow for the first day of the new school year.
