Maui man dies in motorcycle accident

HAIKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 29-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday after colliding into a pickup truck on Kuihelani Highway, according to the Maui Police Department.

Haiku resident Jordan Costa was traveling northbound on his 2007 Honda motorcycle at approximately 10:45 p.m. when he crashed into the rear of a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck also traveling northbound, police said. After the collision, the motorcycle skidded off the roadway into the brush on the eastern shoulder of the highway where it then caught fire.

Costa, who was wearing a helmet at the time, died at the scene. The 54-year-old driver of the pickup truck did not sustain any injuries.

Police said speed is suspected as a factor in this crash, but it has not been determined whether drugs and alcohol were involved.

This is Maui County's 15th traffic fatality this year, as compared to 10 the same time last year.
