HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Volcanic haze, also known as vog can make it difficult to breathe. It can also create lightning. That's one of the findings in a study conducted by some University of Hawaii scientists including Dr. Steve Businger. He joined us on Sunrise this morning to talk about vog and the impact it had on Tropical System Flossie when it passed over the islands last August. Flossie had no lightning prior to reaching the Big Island. But once it began to interact with the island's volcanic haze, Flossie had numerous lightning observations enhance by the vog particles. Watch the video of Dr. Businger's interview and check out the "vog model" and forecast at here.
