DONETSK, UKRAINE (CNN) - An international team tried again Monday to reach the crash site of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 without success.

They left without the contingent of reporters, which was stopped by pro-Russian separatists. Witnesses on the ground told CNN the team of experts, observers and investigators turned back and headed toward Donetsk without reaching the crash site.

The CNN team reported shelling could be heard in the area.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe had hoped to get access following negotiations with both sides involved in the conflict.
