HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has released photos of a recent explosive event at the Halemaumau crater.
Scientists say the explosion threw spatter bombs onto the rim of Halemaumau at the site of the tourist overlook, closed since 2008.
It happened Wednesday morning around 10 a.m. on the southeastern wall of the Overlook crater. In the first image from a webcam positioned on the rim of Halemaumau you can see spatter in the air directly in front of the camera.
In one of the photos you can see where 'spatter' landed on wooden fencing laying on the ground at the closed tourist overlook. That spatter ignited the fence in a few places.
