TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The recent crash of a Malaysia Airlines flight that was shot down over Ukraine was a tragedy for many as hundreds on board died. One Toledo woman is thankful that, for her, the tragedy is not worse.

Nina Corder received a call last Thursday from her father, saying her sister, Wani Hashim, was on flight MH-17. Hashim works for Malaysia Airlines, and her family believed her dead when the flight made the news.

"My dad started shaking," Corder recalled. "He was like, ‘I don't know what to do. You need to do something.'"

Corder says she finished a meeting for work and then sat in her car for more than three hours trying to learn anything about the disaster. She tried called her sister several times, but received no answer.

"I was to tears," she said. "I'm usually the strongest one and I don't like to show my emotion. I just started crying."

But later that afternoon, Corder learned of a twist of fate.

"I picked up my phone and I dialed her again and then I heard her voice say, ‘Hello!'" Corder said.

As Hashim was about to board flight MH-17, the airline staff told her the flight was overbooked. She instead took a flight to Paris to get ready for a meeting in London. When Hashim learned of the flight's fate, she sent a text to her sister.

"I gave up my seat for another passenger. OMG, I nearly took that flight," the text said.

"You know, you are grateful, you are totally blessed about the situation, but guilty," Corder said.

She and her sister know that because Hashim gave up her seat, someone else died. Corder says Hashim has a new outlook on life. She prays more and knows she was given more time.

"I think that is it," Corder said. "I think it's not her time. It's just a miracle."

Corder says she and her sister are upset that the rebel group in Ukraine is controlling access to the crime scene, and that the victims' bodies were not being treated humanely.
