The State Department of Health's Clean Water Branch (CWB) is advising the public to stay out of a portion of Kaneohe Bay after a sanitary sewer overflow Sunday morning.
Officials say heavy rains from remnants of former Tropical Storm Wali caused Kawa Stream to overflow its banks and flood the Kaneohe Transfer Pump Station.
The facility was reportedly under 3-5 feet of commingled waste, storm and stream water and was evacuated. According to officials, it is very difficult to determine the amount of waste water involved.
As a precaution the public is advised to stay out of that portion of Kaneohe Bay from Makani Kai Marina to Kaneohe Yacht Club. Officials have posted warning signs in the area.
