Police warn of phone scammer threatening victims with arrest

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Metro Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam where the caller demands money and threatens the victims with arrest.

Detectives say a person with a foreign accent is calling from what appears to be a police department number and tells victims they must pay money or they will be arrested.

Police say three of these calls have been reported in the past 36 hours.

In one of the calls, a man identified himself as Chief George Turner and said he was calling about a federal warrant.

Police want to remind residents that no one from the department would call and ask for money.

Anyone who receives calls like these are encouraged to hang up and report it to the Emergency Communications Center at (615) 862-8600.
