Hilo man charged with 2 murders wants new lawyer

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A Hilo man accused of a double-homicide is refusing to return to court if he continues being represented by a public defender.

Sean Ivan Masa Matsumoto says he wants a new lawyer because he feels he's not getting adequate representation.

Hilo Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura denied the motion to replace Deputy Public Defender Jeffrey Ng.

Ng couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Matsumoto is charged with murder and other crimes in the shotgun killings of his 45-year-old girlfriend Rhonda Lynn Alohalani Ahu and her 74-year-old mother Elaine Ahu.

Nakamura says indigent criminal defendants must show good cause in order to replace an attorney.

Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Nakamura says he'll see if Matsumoto shows up for a hearing on Monday.
