Sessions at the 2014 Joint Statistical Meetings in Boston, August 2-7, will feature the use of Minitab software to teach statistics. Minitab will also unveil Minitab Express, a new introductory statistical software package for both the Mac and PC, at the conference.
State College, PA (PRWEB) July 17, 2014
For educators attending the 2014 Joint Statistical Meetings in Boston, sessions will highlight how statistical software can be used to teach statistics at the university-level, featuring examples from Minitab software.
Professors rely on statistical software to help them teach data-driven decision making, as well as quantitative process improvement tactics such as Six Sigma. Minitab Inc., the leading provider of software for statistics education and quality improvement, recognizes the challenges faced by educators who not only need to teach statistical concepts, but also how to use software to translate those concepts into results. With this in mind, Minitab Statistical Software was designed to be user-friendly so instructors can focus on teaching.
Minitab is used at more than 4,000 colleges and universities around the world because the software makes it easy for students to understand and apply statistics to real world scenarios.
Dr. Diane Evans, Six Sigma black belt and associate professor of mathematics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, will present Experimenting with Experiments on Monday, August 4, at 10:30 a.m. in Room 212 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
Evans will introduce three activities that require less than 10 minutes to complete in class and provide data for explaining and computing basic probability values, computing probabilities and values associated with the normal distribution, and performing statistical inference with a stable process. Examples from Minitab Statistical Software will be highlighted.
Over the 10 years that Ive been an instructor, Ive found that students are excited to do in-class labs if they involve data that they generate themselves, Evans says. The 5 to 10 minutes that students spend obtaining their own data is well worth their increased energy and motivation in determining solutions based on this real data.
Minitab representatives will be on hand throughout the Joint Statistical Meetings, as well as during the events expo, August 3-6 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Attendees are invited to visit the Minitab booth (#300) to learn more about the companys products and services, including an unveiling of Minitab Express, a new introductory statistics package for both the Mac and PC. The new software will be available beginning in August, and JSM attendees can stop by the Minitab booth to see a live demonstration.
Minitab Express is designed for teaching students who are new to statistics, and includes the essential featuressuch as probability, summary statistics, hypothesis tests, regression, and ANOVA. Because it is available for both OS X and Windows operating systems, students have greater flexibility and instructors can seamlessly teach between platforms.
