A spokesman for Airbus noted it files several hundred patents "on a multitude of innovative concepts and designs" each year.
"However, not all of these ideas, new designs and technologies become final products; we do this to guard our team’s research efforts, and should the future of commercial aviation makes one of our patents relevant, then our work is protected," Airbus stated. It was more than conceptual when Irish budget airline Ryanair proposed test flights for standing-room-only cabins in 2010, according to the Guardian, but regulators shot that plan down. Ryanair was considering offering the economy seating for as low as 1 British pound.
