Principals sign letter in support of Dr. Register

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A letter signed by more than 100 principals and leaders supports Dr. Jesse Register.

Register has been director for five years, and his contract ends next June.

But already, these principals are asking him to stay. They wrote this to nab the attention of the school board.

Educators list some of Metro's success under Register, including "Race to the Top," improvements in Pre-K, development of the academies and middle prep system and the addition of no-cost meals for all students.

"Dr. Register is a fabulous leader, and he does a great job of empowering principals to also be leaders," said Dr. Terry Shrader, principal of Hillsboro High School.

The topic of Register's leadership came up in recent school board meetings, but now other leaders are rallying behind Register, including Mayor Karl Dean.

"We don't agree on everything, but as I tell him frequently, he's done a very good job, he's a very capable administrator and he's served the city well," he said.

But not everyone is a fan. Register has come under fire from some school board members, especially Will Pinkston.

Pinkston says it's time to start thinking about the future. He criticizes the director for making big decisions before seeking more input from parents and the community.
